A Good Sport: Mel C tells LOVE about Fame, Therapy and why she won’t be joining the Spice Girls reunion

Fame – By Melanie C

Spice Girl, singer.

It’s me, Sporty – the one who did the back flips, has the nineties tats and wore the trackies.

You’re not going to get me complaining about my life – it’s brilliant. I know some people complain about the attention – but I wanted to be famous from the start. Like the rest of the Spice Girls I learnt very early on that you can’t take one slice of the pie when it comes to fame. You have to eat the whole thing.

Sure, it’s a weird thing to get your head round at first – I struggled with many aspects of being in the public eye but after 20 years, motherhood and lots of therapy I’m more at peace with the reality of achieving my childhood ambition.

Let’s have a think about the word ‘celebrity’ in the old days. Remember when a little bit of mystery and intrigue ensured our famous faces were true stars. When we didn’t know what they were eating via social media, where they were or who they were hanging out with? Those were the glory days of the modern celebrity world I adored.

There was glamour, excitement and you looked at your idols in a completely different way.

If I wasn’t who I am I’d never be on social media – the entire thing bothers me. Don’t get me wrong – I get it and the power it holds is essential in our modern day world. But I am a child of the 80’s. My first albums were The Kids from Fame, Wham’s Fantastic and Madonna’s Like a Virgin.

Those were my idols – they were famous, talented and ground breaking. That’s what I wanted to be. I wanted to sing, dance and I longed for the world to ‘remember my name’.

My understanding of fame growing up was that it was an enticing by-product of being successful and celebrated for what you do with the God given talent you hope and believe you have. The ability to move, connect with and entertain people on stage enthralled me.

My imagination as a teen stretched quite far. I wanted the Madonna ‘can’t jog in the park without people running alongside me’ situation. Thousands of screaming fans outside my hotel. The Michael Jackson being mobbed at the airport type fame. You know, people shaking and crying because they just met you and BOY did I get it.

Spice Girls reunion for Hyde Park? Mel C would be a good sport

21:53, 3 NOV 2015 UPDATED 21:57, 3 NOV 2015

Sport Spice says: “Performing at Hyde Park would be amazing. I think for the Spice Girls that would be appropriate”

Mel C reckons London’s Hyde Park would be the perfect venue if the Spice Girls ever manage to get back together.

She tells us: “We’ve talked about it, but we just haven’t got our act together.

“We’re a bit useless.

“But performing at Hyde Park would be amazing.

“I went to see Taylor Swift there this year and it was so wonderful. It was a really good, fun gig. I think for the Spice Girls that would be appropriate. It’s a bit more friendly.”

Yet a possible reunion for the Brit awards in February is definitely not on the cards.

Mel, right, adds: “There’s definitely no chance we’ll get our act together by then.

“It’s a shame, actually. We need to stop procrastinating and get on with something.”

Sort it out, girls.

Mel C talks about why the Run for the 96 is so important

Former spice girl Mel C says it’s important we keep the memory of the 96 who lost their lives during the Hilsborough disaster alive.

The Scouse singer has been a vocal supporter of the campaign for justice, and even performed on the Justice Collective single ‘He ain’t heavy’ in the aftermath of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report, which became Christmas number one in 2012.

Today over 2,300 runners took part in a charity race at Stanley Park to mark the 26th anniversary of the disaster.

A team of 10 intrepid runners have also completed a 78-mile run from Hillsborough to Anfield over the past two days.

Speaking ahead of today’s 5k , Mel C said it is important to keep the memory of the 96 alive.

She said: “It’s so wonderful to be here today for the very first Run for the 96 5k.

“I’ve been aware of it for a while, and I just think it’s a brilliant opportunity for the city – and people from all over the world – to take part for the first one.

“I hope it gets bigger and better. It’s raising so much money for the local community, but also to keep the memory alive which is so, so important.”

[Melanie C] Asia’s Got Talent press launch event in Singapore

AXN held Asia’s Got Talent press launch event in Singapore on 27 January, 27th 2015. Anggun, David Foster, Melanie C, and Van Ness Wu are the judges for Asia’s Got Talent which will be aired in AXN and many other local channels on March, 12th 2015.

Melanie C reveals she is to be a judge on Asia’s Got Talent

While Mel B has been ruffling feathers on the panel for Britain’s X Factor, her former bandmate Melanie C has revealed she’s about to go one bigger and better … as a judge on Asia’s Got Talent.

The Spice Girl has been signed up for the show which is being billed as the biggest talent competition in the world.

She has been teasing fans via her social media since jetting out to Singapore to film the series, and now she’s announced the reason behind her globetrotting.

“I am thrilled to have been asked to be a part of the judging panel for what promises to be the mother of all talent shows,” says Melanie. “Not only will I get to enjoy the performances of applicants from 13 countries (hopefully there will be some opportunities for a bit of chair-dancing!) but I also get to travel to an amazing part of the world that I rarely have the chance to visit. How exciting is that?!!

“It’s going to be broadcast in more countries than I can remember … and there was me thinking that this year’s birthday would be dull compared to last year!”

Melanie is joined in the judging line-up by three other big names in the worldwide music industry, although perhaps they’re less well known in the UK.

Multiple Grammy-winning music producer David Foster, who discovered and helped launch the careers of Michael Buble, Josh Groban and Celine Dion, is in there along with Indonesian rock icon Anggun and Taiwanese-American pop idol Van Ness Wu.

Singers or groups who advance to the semi-finals will face a a viewer audience vote, with the semi-finals and finale being held at the iconic Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. The winner will be awarded a contract to return and perform live.

Asia’s Got Talent is the 63rd version of Got Talent, and the world’s first ever pan-regional edition of the show which won the Guinness World Records title for being the world’s Most Successful Reality TV Format in 2014. It is co-owned by FremantleMedia and Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment.
