Victoria Beckham revealed in a recent interview how lucky she feels to be such a success in her chosen fields of music and designing. The Former Spice Girl said:

Honestly I wake up every morning and pinch myself. I appreciate how lucky I am. I don’t take anything for granted. I have an amazing family and a job I love. It’s all so incredible.

And Victoria – who has four children with hubby David Beckham – got us all rather excited when she confessed she’s thinking about branching out into the shoe and tech designing biz. She told British Airways’ Business Life magazine:

I might design shoes next. Or something surprising in technology perhaps. All I know right now, is that I’m enjoying the journey.

David Beckham’s five years in Major League Soccer (MLS) have “delivered on all aspects”, commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday, adding that he hopes the England international will stay on in the league.

Beckham’s original five-year deal with the L.A Galaxy concludes after the November 20 MLS Cup final between his club and the Houston Dynamo and the 36-year-old midfielder has yet to decide whether to return.

“I certainly hope to see him back,” said Garber, who added he could not however predict if Beckham would return.

“David, (his personal manager) Simon Fuller and Tim Leiweke of (Galaxy owners) AEG will go through a process after the Cup to try to determine what David’s future is but I certainly hope to have him back,” Garber said on a teleconference call.

Former Manchester United midfielder Beckham joined the Galaxy from Real Madrid in 2007 amid a wave of publicity, signing a league record $6 million a year contract with MLS hoping his high-profile would attract bigger crowds, more sponsors and more mainstream media attention.

“David has delivered for us on all aspects of our expectations, both on and off the field. David had a terrific year this year. It would be hard to argue that he wasn’t one of the most important players on our fields and really contributed to his team and to the league competitively,” said Garber.

“Off the field, he continues to be an important part of what drives some of the popularity of our league both here and around the world.

“He remains a very popular guy. His presence on the sports pages but also on the ‘people pages’ continues to grow as opposed to wane here in America and we benefit from that.

“MLS wouldn’t be what it is today if David didn’t decide to come and play in Major League Soccer. All of us appreciate everything that he has done,” Garber said.

Beckham has, however, faced criticism for his decision to travel back to Europe for England commitments and for his loan move to AC Milan in Italy, which ended in a serious injury.

That Achilles tendon injury wrecked his contribution to the Galaxy last season and cost him a place in England’s World Cup squad at the 2010 World Cup.

“It hasn’t been perfect — I don’t think any relationship is ever perfect, there were certainly some things we might have done a little differently — but all in all it has been really a big success,” said Garber.

“We measure David’s success very quantitatively. Galaxy games on the road have our highest average attendance, with a few exceptions the L.A. Galaxy are our highest rated team on television, L.A Galaxy kit sales are among the highest and without a doubt there is more attention for David off the sports pages than any other MLS player.

“I travel quite a bit outside of the United States on football-related business and people seem to ask about two things — when are the Cosmos coming into Major League Soccer and how is David Beckham doing?”

news nextboost

Next shares climbed after the company said that strong sales from its internet and catalogue business had offset poor trading on the high street. However, Lord Wolfson, the company’s chief executive, warned that economic conditions had deteriorated, echoing many other shopkeepers, who have fretted that consumers have stopped spending in recent weeks.

Retail sales fell 3.3pc in the third quarter to the end of October, worse than the first-half’s 1.8pc decline, with trading hit by warmer temperatures at the end of September, which put many customers off buying scarves, coats and jumpers.

“There is no question that very warm weather has affected seasonal sales, but there does seem to be a slight weakening generally in the consumer as well,” Lord Wolfson said.

“There were a couple of weeks which were pretty scary.” Though he added that the last couple of weeks in October, when the temperature dipped, had been better. “You can almost plot this with a thermometer.”
However, the fact that the company reiterated that it would hit the City’s profit forecasts and that its online sales were better than expected helped the shares climb 166p to £27.23.

Many had been nervous that sales at Next, along with many other high street retailers, had collapsed in September. A number of chains, from Mothercare to Carpetright, have issued dire profit warnings. The company said that though high-street sales fell 3.3pc in the quarter, sales through Next Directory, which includes both its catalogue and internet business, rose 16.9pc, helping to lift net sales by 3.3pc in the quarter.

The company, the second biggest clothing brand behind Marks & Spencer, said it had been helped by new ranges, including a lingerie collection by Geri Halliwell, the former Spice Girl singer, attracting customers back into the shops and onto the website. “It has gone very well,” Lord Wolfson said of the underwear launch.

The company’s promise to deliver products the following day when ordered by 9pm has also driven traffic to the website, helped by shoppers using Wi-Fi at home to buy products from their phones. “The growth we are seeing online is greatest in the evening.”

Most analysts believe that like-for-like sales from its high street stores – a figure the company does not give out – fell by about 7pc to 8pc but most thought this was credible, considering that many shoppers have drifted online. Freddie George at Seymour Pierce described the internet sales as a “knock out performance”.

Lord Wolfson added that he was cautiously optimistic that conditions for consumers would improve in the new year, when inflation was due to fall. “Come January, February and March, the increase in VAT, in petrol prices, in clothes prices, these will fall out of the system.”

He argued, however, that reducing the deficit was more important than a return to the lower VAT level of 17.5pc, which would be inflationary and only serve to “make matters worse”.

The company said it remained confident it would not have to increase clothing prices next year. It raised prices by 8pc at the start of this year. Many clothing chains have been unable to pass on higher wholesale clothing prices to customers.
